We've been part of the Tahoe community for over 12 years. Our insider knowledge of the best trails, restaurants, and seasonal events is yours to tap into.

When you're planning a Lake Tahoe vacation, the accommodation you choose shapes everything about your experience. Hotels offer convenience, certainly — but they can't give you the space, privacy, and authenticity that a vacation rental provides. Imagine waking up to your own private deck overlooking the lake, brewing coffee in a fully stocked chef's kitchen, and spending your evenings around a crackling fire pit with the people you love most.
Lake Tahoe vacation rentals through StayHaven give you the freedom to live like a local. Instead of squeezing your family into two hotel rooms with a connecting door, you get a real home — multiple bedrooms, a living room large enough for everyone, a dining table where you can share meals together, and outdoor spaces that extend your living area into the Sierra Nevada landscape itself.
The financial case is equally compelling. When you divide the cost of a StayHaven vacation rental among four, six, or even twelve guests, you'll typically pay less per person than a comparable hotel stay — while getting dramatically more space, better amenities, and the flexibility to cook your own meals. Our properties include everything from basic kitchen staples to professional-grade cookware, so you can save on restaurant bills without sacrificing quality.
And then there's the location. Our vacation rentals put you directly in the environments you came to Tahoe to experience — on the lake shore, in the forest, at the base of the ski slopes. You're not commuting from a hotel strip to the attractions; you're already there, already immersed, already living the Lake Tahoe experience from the moment you arrive.
Most people know Lake Tahoe as a winter wonderland — and it's true that the ski season from November through April draws visitors from across California and Nevada to world-class resorts like Heavenly, Kirkwood, Northstar, and Palisades Tahoe. But limiting your Tahoe visit to winter means missing three other extraordinary seasons.
Summer at Lake Tahoe is arguably the most spectacular. The lake's famous deep blue water — 99.7% pure, with visibility up to 70 feet — reaches swimmable temperatures in July and August. Days are warm and sunny, wildflowers blanket the mountain meadows, and hiking trails that were buried under snow just weeks earlier open up to some of the most dramatic scenery in North America.
Fall brings a quieter magic. The crowds thin out, prices drop, and the aspen groves surrounding the lake turn brilliant gold and amber. It's the season for long hikes without the summer crowds, lakeside restaurants with open tables, and crisp evenings perfect for hot tubs and fireplaces.
Spring skiing is a Tahoe institution — warm sunny days on soft corduroy snow, with the lake sparkling below and the slopes still holding enough base to ski into May or even June. A StayHaven vacation rental gives you a home base to experience all of it, in every season.
Lake Tahoe offers world-class experiences in every direction. Explore our local guides to plan the perfect itinerary.
Planning a Lake Tahoe vacation involves more choices than most destinations — and that's part of what makes it so exciting. The lake itself sits at 6,225 feet elevation, straddling the California-Nevada border, surrounded by 72 miles of shoreline and 14 major ski resorts within 90 minutes of the lake. Understanding the geography helps you choose the right neighborhood and the right StayHaven property for your trip.
The North Shore — encompassing Tahoe City, Kings Beach, and Incline Village — is generally quieter, more residential, and beloved by those who prioritize natural beauty over nightlife. This is where you'll find some of the lake's most pristine beaches, the historic Tahoe City waterfront, and easy access to the Truckee River for float trips and fishing. Our North Shore properties tend to be popular with families, couples, and those looking for a more peaceful retreat.
The South Shore centers on South Lake Tahoe, California, and Stateline, Nevada — the latter home to the major casino hotels that define the south shore's entertainment scene. Heavenly Ski Resort straddles the state line here, offering 4,800 acres of skiing and some of the most dramatic lake views from any ski resort in North America. The south shore is more lively, with a wider range of restaurants, shops, and nightlife options.
Getting to Lake Tahoe is straightforward from most Bay Area and Sacramento locations. The drive from San Francisco takes approximately 3.5 hours via I-80 to Truckee or Highway 50 to South Lake Tahoe. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is just 45 minutes from the North Shore and serves direct flights from dozens of major cities. During winter, always check chain control requirements and carry chains or have a 4WD vehicle.
The best time to visit depends entirely on what you're looking for. Ski season peaks from late December through March, with the best snow conditions typically in January and February. Summer beach season runs from late June through Labor Day. Shoulder seasons — May/June and September/October — offer lower prices, fewer crowds, and genuinely beautiful conditions. Many of our guests have discovered that they prefer the shoulder seasons precisely because the lake feels more like a private paradise.
Every review comes from a confirmed guest. No paid placements, no curated highlights — just honest experiences from real stays.
“We've been coming to Lake Tahoe for years but this was our first time booking through StayHaven — and we'll never go back to hotels. The Cedar Retreat was absolutely stunning. The private dock made our mornings magical: coffee with your feet in the lake, watching the sun come over the mountains. The StayHaven team was responsive and thoughtful, even leaving a welcome basket of local products. Already booked for next summer.”

“Ski-in/ski-out was everything we hoped for. We skied Northstar for five days straight, coming back to a warm chalet, hot cocoa, and a fireplace. The beds were incredibly comfortable after long days on the mountain. StayHaven's local team gave us a restaurant guide that was spot-on — we ate at three places we never would have found on our own. Impeccable service.”

“Fourteen people — three generations — under one roof for a week. The Sierra View Lodge handled it perfectly. The game room kept the kids entertained on the one rainy afternoon, the outdoor deck fit all of us for dinners, and the kitchen was actually big enough to cook for a crowd. Grandma called it the best family vacation in 20 years. That's all you need to know.”

“Came for a solo writing retreat in October and left with 40,000 words and a completely restored soul. The cabin is exactly what it looks like — cozy, private, and surrounded by forest that turns golden in fall. The hot tub under the stars was a nightly ritual. StayHaven's digital guidebook pointed me to the best coffee shop in Incline Village, which became my morning office. Perfect.”

“Celebrated our anniversary at the Sunset Villa and it exceeded every expectation. The heated pool was incredible — we swam at 9pm with the stars out and the lake glowing in the distance. StayHaven left champagne and chocolates as an anniversary surprise, which we absolutely did not expect. The kind of thoughtful touch that makes all the difference.”

“The paddleboards and kayaks were a game changer for our stay. We launched directly from the private dock every morning before the lake got busy, exploring the Keys waterways before breakfast. The property itself is immaculate — modern, well-equipped, and genuinely beautiful. StayHaven's booking process was the smoothest I've ever experienced for a vacation rental.”

Booking a vacation rental for the first time — or even the fifth time — always comes with questions. After 12+ years helping guests find the perfect Lake Tahoe home, our team has compiled the most useful advice for making your stay exceptional from arrival to departure.
Pack for the elevation. Lake Tahoe sits at over 6,000 feet above sea level, and the surrounding mountains go much higher. Even in summer, temperatures drop significantly after sunset, and afternoon thunderstorms are common from late July through August. Bring layers regardless of the season, and stay hydrated — the altitude affects people differently, and drinking extra water your first day will help you adjust faster.
Plan your grocery run before you arrive. While Tahoe City, South Lake Tahoe, and Kings Beach all have well-stocked supermarkets, the best strategy is to shop at a larger store in Sacramento, Reno, or the Bay Area before you head up. Prices in mountain resort towns are higher than in the valley, and having a fully stocked kitchen when you arrive means your first morning can be relaxed and unhurried rather than spent finding a store.
Book your activities in advance. Summer kayak tours, popular hiking guides, and ski lesson packages all book out quickly during peak season. If there's a specific activity that's central to your trip — a sunrise hike to Mount Tallac, a guided fishing trip on the lake, a sunset sailing excursion — reserve it before you arrive. Our digital welcome guide includes direct links to our vetted local activity providers.
Understand the driving conditions. Mountain driving in winter requires preparation. Check chain control requirements at Caltrans (I-80) and the South Lake Tahoe Chamber (Highway 50) before you depart. Keep chains in your vehicle even if you have AWD or 4WD — law enforcement does issue fines for being unprepared. Our team is always available to advise on current road conditions and alternative routes.
Leave no trace. The Lake Tahoe basin is one of the most ecologically sensitive environments in North America. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency enforces strict regulations around campfires, wildlife feeding, and waste disposal. All StayHaven properties are equipped with proper recycling and composting facilities. We ask all guests to respect the natural environment that makes Tahoe so extraordinary.
